Having Coffee with James Kingsley yesterday we were chatting about " locally ". You know, looking at conferences in terms of the 100 mile diet. All to often it's the same scenario played out all the time, heading to some major urban center listen to big name speakers that have journeyed from distant place. The reality is for most of us...the whole dang thing is out of context.

And, I love this from Mark Van Steenwyk in a post " Seven loving challenges for Emergent "...

We need to diversify our public voices. If you DO decide to have a conference, please don’t rely upon the handful of well-known Emergent gurus. I remember the first time I griped to Tony Jones about the “emergentsia.” He told me that they try to share speaking opportunities with folks and include others in things. I believe he is correct. I don’t blame him at all for the existence of an emergentsia. I blame us. We keep asking the same 6 people to speak at events. Let’s drop the razzle-dazzle and find some new voices so that our movement doesn’t become inbred or developmentally retarded.

This has been such a big part of everything Poasis, this sense of locally. It is like shopping locally, our events take on the flavor of our neighborhood. It's in our neighborhoods, we've even moved around the neighborhoods this year. It might be a little nomadic for some...but it gives you a little sense of the city, and the neighborhoods these faith communities find themselves. You get to hear alot of local voices, people working out their artistic faith in your neighborhoods. It's also a chance to bump into people, rub elbows, chat with local folks...make some new friends.

Anyways, this is a chance to shop, eat and feast on the creativity of local creatives, planting and cultivating their faith right here in Victoria.
