the first post

This blog begins as a response to the first"Telling the Truth" conference held in Victoria, BC. At this conference, a group of artists, pastors and musicians met to discuss the future of the arts and artists in the Christian community local to Victoria.

The members who are invited to post on this blog are part of a conversation that started at that time and is ongoing.

This blog will serve as a forum to discuss worship and the arts, theology through the arts, and other such coffee-shop talk.

The e-handle of the blog, "poasis", is a play on words: poesis is a Greek word meaning "creation" - referring specifically to works of art - from which we derive the word "poetry" - AND "oasis" which, as everyone knows, means "A fertile or green spot in a desert or wasteland, made so by the presence of water" OR "a situation or place preserved from surrounding unpleasantness; a refuge".

The church can be a desert, an alienating place for artists, a place where they are met with misunderstanding and fear. We aim to provide a safe place, to be a life-giving wellspring for the artist.
