On October 27-30, 2006, the City of Victoria will host the first International Arts Symposium to ever be held in Victoria.
The inaugural, multi-discipline symposium will be themed “Artists of Conscience,” an exploration of how an artist’s work is impacted by their awareness of and involvement in vital, and often controversial, social issues. A series of keynote speakers, panel discussions, workshops, and performances will be offered in the Victoria Conference Centre and other venues throughout the downtown core.
“The Symposium is designed to encourage dialogue and celebration”, said Sue McKay, Community Recreation Development Coordinator in the Parks, Recreation and Community Development Department. “We hope to engage local artists as well as artists from across Canada and around the globe to encourage lively debate and discussion on issues that are important to the arts community and to the community as a whole.”
Topics for the Symposium embrace a wide range of social issues including: Art and Ecology, Radical Architecture, Feminism of the Arts, Music and Activism, Indigenous Art, and Art vs. Violence and War.
Long term plans support hosting an arts symposium every second year, each time with a new theme of relevance to Victoria’s vibrant community of artists and arts supporters.

Hey James - I'm thinking this could be a good reason to leave the Telling the Truth conference on October 20-21. People who want to participate in the Gulu walk could easily leave at noon on the saturday (with our blessing and a hearty dose of promotion for the event). In fact, it might even get a few conference folks fired up to head down to finish grounds at the legislature for the evning concerts/ rally etc
i think it'd be stellar to actually end the conference on saturday at noon - let people go for lunch together and then encourage everyone to head down to the walk. that would keep the conference to a short and sweet evening keynote(fri) and morning panel and discussion(sat)...
thoughts?
